Social and community-based gender violence against migrant and refugee women in Catalonia
Gender-based violence is a global phenomenon that affects all women, regardless of age, social class, racial or ethnic origin, etc. However, its effects are not the same for everyone. An intersectional perspective shows how women are impacted by multiple axes of oppression, meaning their experiences of gender-based violence take on particular forms that must be considered when designing appropriate responses for its eradication.
Currently, in Catalonia, the settlement of migrant communities from diverse regions has led to the emergence and visibility of specific forms of gender-based violence that are especially relevant in social and community contexts. Human trafficking for sexual exploitation, female genital mutilation, forced marriages, and sexual harassment or sex-based harassment in the workplace are paradigmatic examples.
In light of this reality, this project seeks to understand how these types of violence manifest and how they are confronted, with a focus on the use of public resources and services that support victims of gender-based violence. While more studies have addressed violence within intimate partner relationships, there is less data on public pathways and services available to support women who have experienced community-based forms of violence.
To fill this knowledge gap, VIOMIG carries out a one-year qualitative study that will culminate in the production of a final report and recommendations for improving the adequacy of general services for a diverse population.
OBJECTIVE
To understand how social and community-based gender violence manifests and is confronted, with a focus on the obstacles faced by migrant and refugee women when accessing public resources and services for victims of gender-based violence, as well as the potential limitations encountered by professionals when providing support.
METHODOLOGY
The research adopts a qualitative methodology that combines primary and secondary sources, placing significant emphasis on a situated analysis of women’s voices and experiences.
RESULTS
The findings will be presented in a final report that will include data analysis as well as recommendations aimed at adapting and improving services for victims of gender-based violence from an intersectional, intercultural, and human rights–based perspective.
