Challenge
Roma students face barriers in the Spanish university system that hinder the completion of their higher education. These difficulties are further exacerbated for those who are the first in their family to enroll at university.
Objective
To identify the profiles of Roma students in Spanish universities and the barriers they face, with the aim of defining evidence-based actions that contribute to overcoming these difficulties and, consequently, increasing the graduation rate of these students.
Communicative methodology
It allows for describing reality and contributing to its transformation, promoting the social, political, and scientific impacts of research. It is based on a mixed-methods approach that combines qualitative techniques—such as literature reviews and documentary analysis, questionnaires, in-depth interviews, focus groups, and daily life stories—with a longitudinal study.
Territories with the largest Roma population
Andalucia
It is estimated that the Roma population is 350,000 inhabitants (MSPSI, 2011).
Catalonia
It is estimated that the Roma population is 65,000 inhabitants (MSPSI, 2011).
