The Interuniversity Master’s in Contemporary Migration opens the 2026–2027 academic year with the lecture ‘The Ceuta Crisis’

The UAB-UB Interuniversity Master’s in Contemporary Migration and Interuniversity Diploma in Immigration: Rights and Social Cohesion, both promoted by CER-Migracions, marked the opening of the 2026–2027 academic year with an event bringing participants together to reflect on the current challenges of migration.

The event featured the lecture ‘The Ceuta Crisis’, delivered by Dr Diego Boza, coordinator of the master’s programme and Assistant Professor of Criminal Law at the University of Cádiz, whose areas of expertise include crimmigration, expulsion, immigration detention centres and the detention of migrants.

During his lecture, Boza provided a broad and valuable context for understanding the situation in Ceuta and the events of this past July. His presentation placed these developments within a wider framework, connecting the city’s circumstances with migration dynamics and institutional responses in Spain and Europe.

He also explained how this context relates to the European Pact on Migration and Asylum and addressed other aspects of immigration in Europe and Spain. The lecture offered insights into the interplay between migration policies, border management and migrants’ rights.

The event thus opened a new academic year, encouraging students to examine contemporary migration from a critical, interdisciplinary perspective grounded in current affairs.
